Why We Don’t Fit in a Box!

One of the things we love most about making music is that it’s never been about fitting into a box. Our roots are in blues, rock, Americana, country, and folk. But for a while we thought we had to choose one to be accepted and taken seriously in the industry.

What we’ve realised is that our music naturally became its own thing, and people tell us they can always recognise it as our sound.

The other day, someone in the Music Industry gave us one of the best compliments we could hope for:

“You don’t sound like anyone else and no one else sounds like you.”

That really hit home, because it’s not something we set out to achieve. We didn’t sit down and say, “Let’s create a brand new sound.” It’s just the way our songs come out when we write together. And that feels really special.

⚡️ ⚡️ ⚡️

Of course, we carry our influences with us Cream, Led Zeppelin, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, The Civil Wars, Guns N’ Roses… singers like Steven Tyler, Robert Plant, Bonnie Raitt and Paul Rodgers…

On the country side, artists like Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert, Johnny Cash, and Big & Rich to name but a few.
All of that pours into the mix, and somehow it comes out sounding like us 🔥

Writing is always about the moment we’re in.

That’s why each album feels different from the last, it reflects exactly where we are, how we’re feeling, and what we’re experiencing.

Sometimes we write about our own lives, sometimes about people we know, and sometimes about what’s happening in the world around us. But it’s always rooted in the now.

And that’s the exciting part every time we sit down to write, we never quite know what’s going to come out.

Thanks for being on this journey with us and for letting our songs be part of your story too.

A new chapter begins...

It’s hard to believe it’s nearly three months since Addicted To You came out.

What’s even crazier is that we actually finished recording it well over a year ago, so the songs feel deeply embedded in us now.

his album was a big shift for us. Normally, we take songs into the studio already pretty complete and then build out the arrangements
🔥 🔥 🔥
But with Addicted To You, we wrote it in the studio with Ads and Foxy, our first time ever co-writing a whole record.

At the time, it felt like we’d hit a bit of a glass ceiling creatively, and opening ourselves up in that way brought a whole new layer of dynamics and expression to the music. Looking back, it feels symbolic of us finding our feet, opening up, and allowing ourselves to grow.

⚡️ ⚡️ ⚡️

We’ve shared a couple of stories about the meanings behind the songs already, and we’ll be sharing more over the coming months.

And now, we’ve just stepped into the studio again to start writing and sketching out ideas for our fifth album… wild to even say that out loud!

True to form, we’ve swung from six-piece arrangements back to a stripped-down three-piece. Next year we’ll be touring as both, which is one of the joys of being independent, we get to follow wherever the music pulls us.

It really does feel like the start of a new chapter. But before that, we’ve got an epic weekend ahead with three festivals including Edinburgh Fringe… so exciting times all round.

Thanks, as always, for being part of this journey with us 🙏

New project incoming...

Hope you’re having a great week!

We’re heading into the studio on Monday to start work on a brand new project, and it feels so good to be back writing and creating again. If you’ve joined us on the livestreams, you’ll know this one’s going to be based around a trio setup.

Why? Since our touring life changed pace, we’ve found ourselves either on tour or off tour – with big gaps in between. We want to keep playing more regularly, so this album will be something a little more raw and less produced than Addicted To You, giving us the freedom to take a three-piece out on the road between six-piece shows. That means smaller venues, new places, and more chances to connect with you in person.

It’ll be us with Foxy (our drummer/multi-instrumentalist), and we can’t wait to start work with Ads and Foxy next week.

If you’d like a peek behind the scenes, we’ll be sharing some moments over on >Patreon<

Fresh live videos + something a bit special…

We’ve just uploaded a couple of new live videos to our YouTube channel... one from our duo tour and one from the full band tour, and we wanted to share them with you first.

Hope you enjoy them!

As we gear up for the Tree Of Life Tour (not long now!), we’re making a few upgrades to our setup.

To help fund some of the new gear, we’ve put together an eBay auction with a few very special items... things like signed instruments, test pressings, and some well-loved pedals from past tours.

Norway & Midnight Moth Madness

Hey, we made it to beautiful Norway this past weekend, full of excitement and ready to play the Skånevik Blues Festival (what an incredible setting!)  but things didn’t quite go as planned…

Just three hours before we were due to hit the stage, I took a really nasty fall on some rocks. It was a heavy and painful blow, and unfortunatley had to be rushed to hospital by the amazing Norwegian emergency services 🚑

Grace stayed by my side at the hospital, and as you can imagine, we were both gutted not to be able to perform that night.
But thankfully, our incredible bandmates Adam Bowers, James Fox, and Matt Waller came to the rescue. They stepped up and played a killer blues set in our place.
⚡️ ⚡️ ⚡️
They absolutely smashed it, and we’re beyond lucky to have such talented, big-hearted musicians on our team. Massive love and respect to those legends. 🖤

Unfortunately, the accident also meant we had to miss Alfold Rock & Blues Festival on Sunday, which was again deeply disappointing, we hate letting anyone down.

I was blown away by the amazing Get Well Soon video sent by everyone at Alfold, it brought a tear to my eye, I’m  certainly feeling the love 🙏

We’re now back in the UK (a few days later than planned) and I’m officially on the mend. And most importantly we’ll be back on stage this Friday for Bures Festival and we cannot wait! 🔥🎸

Thank you so much to everyone who helped us this weekend, and to both festivals for being so compassionate and understanding. It means the world.

Midnight Moth Mania!

We’ve been absolutely blown away by the response to our Midnight Moth T-Shirts thank you so much to everyone who’s grabbed one!

The design was inspired by the lyric “Like a Moth to a Flame” from our Addicted To You single, and the artwork comes straight from the our Limited-Edition Pop-up Vinyl. And is only available until the 31st of July, so don't miss out!

Midnight Moth T-Shirt

🔥 A little heads-up… we don’t have many pop up vinyl left. If you’ve got the t-shirt and you love vinyl, you’re going to love the pop-up vinyl with the Moth design.

Thanks so much for supporting our music and our merch!

Something I’ve Never Shared Before 🖤

I hope you’re having a good week so far!

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting as we begin thinking about writing our next record, drawing inspiration from everything we’ve been through since we recorded Addicted To You. And it’s made me realise that although we’ve often said this is our most personal album yet… we’ve never really explained why.

As a fully self-managed, self-releasing band, we handle all of our own promotion. But in focusing on getting the music out there, we’ve sometimes missed the chance to share why we made it. And that why is everything.

It’s also made us reflect on why we stay independent in the first place. It’s not the easy path, but it’s the right one for us, because it gives us the freedom to make music that matters to us. Not music that’s crafted just to be commercial or hooky, but songs that come from something real. Songs that come from experience, emotion, and meaning… like Just Let Them.

This past weekend was Father’s Day in the UK, and it brought up a lot for me. So I wanted to share the story behind that song, one we’ve never really spoken about before.

I rarely talk about my father publicly. As a child, my family unit was whole, he was present, and I never felt like I was missing out on anything. I’m truly grateful for that. But as I got older and began to find my own voice, I challenged some of his behaviour, and from that very first challenge, he cut me off completely for what has now been over 20 years. Over the years, I’ve reached out four or five times, hoping to reconnect. Each time, he’s made it very clear he doesn’t want to see me or have any sort of relationship.

I don’t share this from a place of lack. I’m incredibly grateful for the people I do have in my life. My mum has been more than I could ever have hoped for, and her presence more than made up for anything that might have been missing. I feel so lucky to have the marriage, family, and friendships I do. I truly believe the challenges we face, even the painful ones help shape us into who we’re meant to be.

But I do want to share with you how Just Let Them came out of all of this.

Foxy came in with a beautiful chord progression, and he and Ads worked together to shape the musical foundation of the song. While they were working on the music, the phrase “just let them” kept circling in my head. If someone pushes you away… just let them. You can’t control how people behave, but you can control how you respond. That idea became the emotional anchor for the song.

In the same way as with a few of our other ballads, like Golden, as soon as I heard the music, it was like the melody had already been written. Aaron and I then took that inspiration and went away to shape the lyrics together.

When I went into the studio to record the final vocals with Ads, it was the first time he’d heard the melody or lyrics. It was extremely emotional, and one reason I haven’t spoken about the song until now is because it’s always been so emotionally charged for me. I worried that if I explained the meaning, I might not be able to perform it live.

But something this process has taught me is that even though I’m someone who wears my heart on my sleeve, I also want to be able to carry that emotion in a way that allows me to fully express it, not be overwhelmed by it.

We know Just Let Them already means a lot to some of you. That’s the beautiful thing about music, you take your own meaning from it. But this time, I just wanted to share the root of where it came from.

As we’ve been working on the live album and video from Norwich and The Palladium, it’s reminded us how important it is to stay connected to the reason we do this. We’re here to share something real, and that’s what being independent allows us to do.

Thanks so much for listening, it means more than you know.

Love
